Photo: This is my Dad -- a.k.a. the coolest guy in town
My Dad and I share a high sensitivity to grains, dairy, and other foods that are more difficult to digest. My Dad is a bro -- he's my role model, my confidante and my tea time buddy. Although we are stupidly similar, we have one very large difference... he accepts that he can't have lactose, yet denies his intolerance to wheat because he refuses to give up his morning toast. I'm the complete opposite -- I had no trouble breaking up with gluten and ending that awful, abusive relationship. Cheese, however... that's love. And you don't give up on love.
When I was in Kenya last summer visiting my Dad, I had some allergy testing done and received a list 3 pages long of foods I am allergic to, including "fructose" and "eggs". So forget that, I decided to pretend I had never gone for allergy testing. What stayed with me, however, was the word 'Candida'. This is what the doctor told me I had in my gut that was causing me to have all these ridiculous allergies. She tried to get me on the Candida diet, which if you haven't heard of, is practically a starvation diet to kill off the bacteria. If you're interested in learning more about this awful thing check out this link, but keep in mind that anything you find online can be outdated & inaccurate:

After a few months of following this diet half-assed, my Uncle {who's a nurse} consulted his colleagues and went digging to find the latest research on Candida. He discovered a series of revolting symptoms that are coupled with the bacteria, and agreed to give me a check-up. He took one look at me and relieved all my fear and disgust with one sentence: "what the heck are you talking about, you're fine." Thus begun the adventure to find the lifestyle right for me and my body. I researched and bobbed around between different lifestyles, and I've finally settled on a few simple rules to stay healthy and happy... I avoid what my body doesn't like, nourish my body with everything in moderation, and sweat my socks off every single day. ☕ Tea & Figs ☕ |
